Adaora A. Adimora, MD, MPH, FIDSA, is a highly esteemed figure in the fields of medicine and epidemiology, holding the position of Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Additionally, she serves as a professor of epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. With over 25 years of clinical experience in treating patients with HIV disease, Dr. Adimora has dedicated her career to advancing the understanding of the epidemiology of HIV and STIs.

Her impactful work includes a significant focus on investigating the epidemiology of heterosexual HIV transmission among African Americans. Dr. Adimora’s research has illuminated the role of sexual network patterns in HIV spread and highlighted the influence of macroeconomic and social factors in racial disparities within the US HIV epidemic.

Dr. Adimora chairs the NIH HIV Prevention Trials Network’s Women at Risk Committee and has previously contributed as a member of the NIAID Council. Her commitment to advancing knowledge in the field has been recognized through her election to the National Academy of Medicine.

At the University of North Carolina, Dr. Adimora serves as the Principal Investigator of the UNC site of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study-Women’s Interagency HIV Study Combined Cohort Study (MACS/WIHS CCS). This study is the largest and longest-running cohort focusing on individuals with or at risk for HIV.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Adimora has demonstrated leadership by serving as the former Chair of HIVMA and contributing to various advisory councils, including the NIAID Advisory Council, the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, the DHHS Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel, and the International AIDS Society’s Governing Council.

Notably, Dr. Adimora has played a pivotal role in training and mentoring researchers, particularly African American investigators. She was a prior recipient of a K24 training grant and led the UNC Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program from its inception in 1998 until its conclusion in 2014.

Currently, Dr. Adimora holds the role of Co-Director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and serves as the PI and Director of UNC’s T32 Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV Training Program. Her multifaceted contributions continue to shape and advance the field of medicine and epidemiology.
