Archie Battersbee Death Update: Is He Taken Off Life Support?

Archie Battersbee is a 12-year-old British kid who has been in a coma since April after he suffered a brain injury. After an apparent online Challenge, his parents found him unconscious at home in Southeast Essex.

The Supreme Court refused the family’s appeal against the decision to end his treatment of their son. His mother, Hollie Dance, stated Archie’s treatment would end unless an application was made to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Wednesday by 09:00 BST.

The boy has never regained consciousness, and his mom believes he may have been attempting an online challenge when he suffered brain damage. According to the doctors, his brain stem is dead, meaning the boy will not recover.

Archie Battersbee Death

Archie Battersbee is alive with the help of life support. Appeal court judges ruled keeping him alive is against his interest and rejected his family’s claim that withdrawing life support is a breach of his human rights.

The boy is in a deep coma, and his body cannot function without the help of medics. Archie’s parents said after they lost a Supreme Court bid to keep the treatment, life support is set to be withdrawn on Wednesday morning.

Medics treating the boy at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel east London believe Archie is brain-stem dead and stated continued life-support treatment is not in the boy’s best interest.

But his family said the treatment should continue, saying the boy’s heart was still beating, and he had gripped his mom’s hand. The parents had sought to extend Archie’s treatment to permit time for a United Nations committee to consider the young boy’s case.

Archie Battersbee is set to be taken off his ventilator on Wednesday morning as a panel of three Supreme Court judges refused permission for his parents to appeal. They concluded that the Court of Appeal made the right decision.

The hospital trust treating the kid said it would work with the family to prepare for life support treatment to end. The Supreme Court panel also stated that Archie has no prospect of meaningful recovery.

Archie’s mother, Hollie Dance, said her child’s treatment would end unless an application was made to the ECHR. The medics will switch off his life support at 11:00 if an application is not submitted in time.

The Christian Legal Center, supporting the legal action by Archie’s parents, said their team would submit an application to the court on time to give the boy more time.

Archie Battersbee is the loving son of Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee. The boy was found unconscious at home in Southend, Essex, on April 7 with a ligature around his neck.

His mother believes he was doing the Blackout Challenge, a TikTok challenge that encourages individuals to hyperventilate until they pass out. Doctors treating the boy say he is effectively brain-dead and is kept alive by mechanical ventilation.

Once life support is switched off, doctors say, Archie, will die “almost immediately.” The boy has lost a lot of weight, and his heart and organs are on the verge of closing down.

Hollie and Paul claim that withdrawing treatment would breach the UK’s obligations under Articles 10 and 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.
