Mario Castaño, former senator of the Liberal Party, received a sentence in June of this year for a specified duration. The Supreme Court of Justice handed down the sentence based on his acknowledgment of leading a group involved in legal matters that, in collaboration with mayors, officials, and individuals, misappropriated significant state resources.
Serving as a Representative to the Chamber from 2014 to 2018 and later as a Senator of the Republic in 2022, Castaño was apprehended on June 7 of that same year. The charges against him included offenses such as conspiracy to commit a crime, misappropriation by appropriation, attempted misappropriation by appropriation, aggravated fraud, and concussion.
The Supreme Court highlighted that, due to his position as a congressman, Castaño could influence administrative and contracting procedures by having interactions with various public sector officials.
The group led by Castaño, known as ‘the Marionetas’, came under attention this week with the announcement from the Prosecutor’s Office regarding the legal actions against Raúl Alfonso Cardozo Nuncira and Andrés José Ospina Rosales. Both face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and improper interest in the execution of contracts, related to irregularly benefiting from contracts worth 25,436 million pesos in Quindío and Tolima.
