Syracuse University Administrator, Alumna Cerri Banks Death Cause Explained

Alumna Cerri Banks, Syracuse University’s vice president, died on August 2nd, 2022.

Banks was in charge of the academic and social development of students at Skidmore College. Athletics, campus life & engagement, health and wellness, residential life, career development, student diversity initiatives, and student academic services are just a few of the offices of student affairs that she is in charge of.

She serves as the Board of Visitors Chair for the School of Education and is a Director on the Board of Directors for the Syracuse University Alumni Association. In her work as the dean, as well as in her teaching, research, and writing, Banks, who is dedicated to educational reform and inclusion concerns, draws on academic, feminist, & critical race theory.

Joanna Masingila, head of the School of Education, declares, “I’m so happy to call Cerri a School of Education graduate.”

“She is an exceptional higher education leader who has made significant contributions to the School of Education through her leadership as our Board of Visitors chair. She will be speaking at our conference, and I am thrilled that our 2019 graduates will be able to hear from her.

Banks formerly held the positions of vice president for student affairs, dean of the college at Mount Holyoke College, and dean of William Smith College at Hobart and William Smith Colleges before joining Skidmore in August 2016.

Alumna Cerri Banks Death Cause Explained

A campus-wide email on Monday announced the death of Cerri Banks, Syracuse University’s vice president for the student experience and senior vice president’s assistant.

In the email, Allen Groves, senior vice president, and chief student experience officer, described Banks as a “longtime part of the Orange community” before she was appointed to her role in July of last year. According to the email, she has also been a member of the Board of Visitors for the School of Education since 2009. During that time, she served as the board’s chair for seven years.

Banks worked at Skidmore College, Mount Holyoke College, Hobart, and William Smith Colleges before coming to S.U. last summer. The ScS.U.ol of Education at S.U. is where Banks eaS.U.ed her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees.

Her dedication to pupils and the area of teaching, according to Groves, “was what defined her professional life.” The family, friends, coworkers, and everyone who knew and loved Cerri will miss her dearly.

Who Was Cerri Banks?

Vice President and Senior Vice President’s deputy, Cerri A. Banks, Ph.D., was in charge of high-impact programs and services that aid students’ transition, retention, and success. She oversees the senior vice president’s initiatives, projects, and programs.

She previously held the positions of vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Skidmore College. Banks was in charge of 134 staff members and all departments within Student Affairs at Skidmore, including athletics, campus life & engagement, health and wellness, residential life, career development, student diversity programs, and student academic services.

In addition, Banks held the Dean of William Smith College in Hobart and Vice President for Student Affairs at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Banks has a Ph.D. in cultural foundations of education from Syracuse University as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies in women’s studies. She specializes in qualitative research, sociology of education, and cultural studies.

In her work as the vice president, as well as in her teaching, research, & writing, Banks draws from educational theory, feminist theory, and critical race theory. She is committed to educational reform and concerned about inclusion.

The theoretical idea of cultural capital is expanded in her book Black Women Undergraduates, Cultural Capital and College Success (Peter Lang, 2009), which also offers helpful advice on how colleges and universities should identify and use the cultural capital of all students. She is also a co-author of Teaching, Learning, and Intersecting Identities in Higher Education, an edited book (Peter Lang, 2012).

This book examines how different identities and experiences permeate the classroom using the voices of academics and students from various academic areas. Her most recent endeavor is called No Justice! No Peace! The 2021 book College Student Activism, Race Relations, and Media Cultures by Peter Lang examines the effects of the shifting student activism waves on college campuses. Banks has written numerous papers, book chapters, and speeches on a variety of topics, including identity, learning, and cultural relevance.

Family Mourns Great Loss

Very little is known about the Cerri Banks family due to her less presence on social media. However, we can feel how much of a significant loss and sadness they have been feeling losing her.

Banks was known as an excellent author who was recognized by most of us all over the world. She formerly held the positions of vice president for student affairs, dean of the college at Mount Holyoke College, and dean of William Smith College at Hobart and William Smith Colleges before joining Skidmore in August 2016.

She earned a C.A.S. in women’s and gender studies from the CoC.A.S.of Arts and Sciences and a bachelor’s degree in inclusive primary and special education from the School of Education. She also holds masters and doctoral degrees in cultural foundations of education. She specializes in qualitative research, cultural studies, multicultural education, and sociology of education.

Cultural Capital, College Success, Teaching, Learning, and Intersecting Identities in Higher Education, and No Justice! No Peace! is among Banks’ works that have been published. Race Relations, College Student Activism, and Media Cultures” (2020), as well as other papers on identity, learning, and other topics that are culturally relevant.
