Walt Mcgrory Obituary – Death: Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball Has Passed Away
The Wisconsin men’s basketball program is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its cherished members.
Walt McGrory, a walk-on player who joined the program in 2017 and remained a dedicated team member for four seasons, peacefully left us on Saturday after courageously battling cancer. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in August 2021, McGrory underwent the amputation of part of his left leg in April of the following year.
Originally from Edina High School in Minnesota, McGrory’s resilience and positive spirit have left an enduring impact on the Wisconsin basketball community. Despite facing health challenges, McGrory’s unwavering positivity resonated with his teammates and coaches.
Prior to the season’s commencement, current UW players Tyler Wahl and Carter Gilmore, along with former UW players Trevor Anderson and Carter Higginbottom, made a heartfelt visit to McGrory in Minnesota, cherishing moments reminiscent of their time together.
In September, McGrory initiated a GoFundMe page, where fans and friends rallied to raise over $136,000 to provide support during his battle.
Head coach Greg Gard, recognizing the deeper significance beyond basketball, requested Badger Nation to send thoughts and prayers to McGrory during a post-game interview after UW’s victory over Robert Morris on Nov. 17. Gard expressed the team’s love and concern for McGrory, emphasizing the broader community’s support during this challenging time.
