After suffering a severe brain injury in April, 12-year-old Archie Battersbee has been in a coma. According to the medical professionals caring for him, he is brain-stem dead, and life support is not in his best interests.

Doctors have decided to remove the 12-year-life old’s support after nearly four months in a coma, despite his parents’ efforts to extend his life.

Who Is Archie Battersby?

Only 12-year-old young boy Archie was hospitalized after attempting the blackout challenge, a pernicious TikTok trend that has recently sprouted on the platform.

Archie was discovered unconscious by his mother at home, and his tragic story has touched parents all around the nation, inspiring sympathy and serving as a stark warning about the negative effects of social media.

Archie Battersby is a victim of a catastrophic brain injury and has been admitted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Hollie Dance, Archie’s mother, feels that Archie’s brain damage resulted from participating in a trending social media challenge when she discovered him unconscious at their home on April 7, 2022.

The younger boy’s brain is stem dead, and the doctor suggested continuing life-support treatment is not in his best interests.

After ending his life-support, Archie’s mother said the family was still shocked and traumatized by the harshness of the UK courts and the hospital Trust in a statement released Monday afternoon.

What Happened To Archie Battersby? His Life Support

After Archie Battersbee’s family failed in their last-ditch attempt to keep him alive, a judge decided that his life support could be switched off.

During an urgent Court of Appeal meeting this afternoon, where Sir Andrew McFarlane, President of the Family Division, reaffirmed that it was in Archie’s best interests to have life support stopped, the 12-year-family old’s was informed of his fate.

The judges gainsaid his parents’ plea; however granted a short stay which is a one-day extension, and now it is over. His ventilator switched off according to the judges after given time confinement.

The 12-year-old youngster Archie Battersby has been unconscious since April as a result of a severe brain injury.

His parents were granted a last-minute virtual hearing after scheduling Archie’s life-support withdrawal by the court.

In a virtual hearing a day ago with Sir Andrew McFarlane, Lady Justice King, and Lord Justice Moylan, Edward Devereux QC, speaking on behalf of the family, argued that if his life-sustaining treatment is stopped without delay, the court will be complicit in a flagrant violation of international law.

Archie’s parents applied to the UN in a last-ditch effort to keep their son’s medical care from being discontinued, and the committee contacted the Government on Friday.

The government’s legal division subsequently requested that the courts give the committee’s request immediate consideration in an urgent letter sent on behalf of Health Secretary Steve Barclay on Sunday.

Additionally, a legal halt has been placed on treatment until Monday at 1 o’clock, and the Court of Appeal’s ruling is anticipated to come soon after.

Ligature Over Over Your Head Meaning & Blackout Challenge Details

Typically, a ligature is done by wrapping something around the neck and applying pressure from a location called the tie-off. In the past, a showerhead was frequently the culprit; however, most institutions have already addressed this issue. A patient’s head has traditionally been regarded as the tying-off point.

The blackout challenge, also known as the choking challenge or the pass-out challenge, is one of the most recent risky trends on TikTok.

Eight-year-old Lalani Erika Renee Walton from Texas and nine-year-old Arriani Jaileen Arroyo from Wisconsin both passed away due to the challenge. It appears that both girls were frequent TikTok users who enjoyed sharing videos on the platform.

The shortage of oxygen to the brain caused by the blackout challenge can be fatal. Archie’s mother believes he was trying the challenge even though it is unknown because she discovered him with a ligature (a piece of fabric that has been knotted or tied around his head).

The Irish Examiner explained the impact of the blackout challenge by Dr. Nick Flynn. What is happening in the brain, he claimed, is an oxygen shortage comparable to that experienced by someone who is drowning, suffocating, or experiencing a cardiac collapse.

Low oxygen levels in the brain for longer than three minutes can cause brain damage, and they can be fatal for longer than five minutes.

Archie never recovered consciousness in early April when his mother discovered him at home. As a result of his accident, he has been in a coma ever since.

Doctors confronted the boy’s signs of brain deterioration were significant, and his prognosis could only lead to his grave. Archie’s mother, however, believed that his stable heartbeat and ability to regulate his temperature and blood pressure was a reason to give him more time.

Why Is Archie Battersby On-Life Support?

After Doctor’s confrontation that Archie’s brain is stem- dead and therefore he couldn’t live without life support, the younger boy has been serving the same from Barts NHS trust since May.

Archie’s mother, Hollie Dance, and father, Paul Battersbee, 57, from Southend-on-Sea in Essex, have been fighting a legal battle against Barts NHS trust.

After the Court of Appeal decided that Archie’s life support should end at noon on Tuesday, August 2, his parents filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee indicated that they would submit a direct appeal to the Supreme Court for consideration despite the Court of Challenge refusing Archie’s parents’ permission to appeal the decision.

She said that she would fight till an end outside the hospital where Archie was being treated.
