Prior to the tragic car accident during a New Year’s concert, law enforcement discovered a suicide note and journal in the suspect’s hotel room.

The incident involved two vehicles, one carrying gas containers, colliding with a crowd outside the concert venue, leading to two casualties and five injuries. The Joint Terrorism Task Force of the FBI is actively investigating the case.

Law enforcement identified the suspect as 35-year-old Michael Avery from Syracuse, NY, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Domestic terrorism, according to the FBI, involves acts that endanger human life, violating state or federal laws, with the apparent intent of intimidating or coercing civilians, influencing government policy, or affecting government operations.

The collision occurred around 12:50 a.m. on Monday when a Ford SUV collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander at a crosswalk outside the venue. The impact propelled both vehicles into a group of pedestrians, resulting in injuries and fatalities. The Mitsubishi driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the Ford driver was critically injured.

A domestic terrorism investigation is underway, with authorities questioning Avery’s family. Although undiagnosed, the family suggests that Avery may have suffered from bipolar disorder. Mayor Malik Evans of Rochester urged the public’s patience as the investigation continues and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

Avery checked into WoodSpring Suites in Greece before the incident, rented an SUV at the airport, and purchased containers and gasoline on Saturday, according to the police. The SUV, containing at least twelve petroleum canisters, was involved in the collision after the concert at the Kodak Center.
