Ronald Fredrick Powell, a former player for the Florida Gators Basketball and Tampa Bay Buccaneers communities, has sadly passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024. The Florida Gators Alumni and ex-American football linebacker, aged 32, succumbed to a medical emergency.
Originally from Moreno Valley, California, Powell was a graduate of the University of Florida. Born on May 14, 1991, he played as a former American football linebacker and was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Powell showcased his athletic prowess at Rancho Verde High School, excelling as a multi-sport athlete in positions such as tight end, defensive end, and linebacker.
In his final high school season, Powell achieved notable statistics, including over 80 tackles, 13 sacks, and 28 tackles for losses on the defensive end. His outstanding performance earned him recognition as an All-American by Parade, USA Today, and EA Sports. Powell was also chosen to participate in the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, where he was named the Most Valuable Player.
Regarded as the top prospect in the class of 2010, Powell received a five-star rating as a college recruit by Rivals.com. He pursued his education at the University of Florida in Gainesville on an athletic scholarship, playing football for the Florida Gators from 2010 to 2013 under the coaching of Urban Meyer and Will Muschamp.
Despite facing challenges, such as a double ACL tear during his junior year, Powell demonstrated resilience. In 2010, he started one game out of thirteen appearances as a freshman and continued to establish himself as a regular starter, starting 12 games as a sophomore. His 2012 season was cut short due to a medical redshirt, and he had eight starts in thirteen games played in 2013.
